What are Friedlander serial codes?

On posters printed by the Friedlander Litho Company there is usually a number on the poster.  This number is actually a code that can be deciphered to the year that the poster was produced.  Here's an example.  On the Servais Le Roy "Decapitation" poster that number is 4230.  This translates to the year 1907, as the numbers 3901 to 4250 denote a poster printed in 1907.
